Logics of Deontic Inconsistency
نویسنده
چکیده
The Logics of Formal Inconsistency (LFIs) are paraconsistent logics which internalize the notions of consistency and inconsistency by means of connectives. Based on that idea, in this paper we propose two deontic systems in which contradictory obligations are allowed, without trivializing the system. Thus, from conflicting obligations Oφ and O¬φ contained in (or derived from) an information set, it can be derived that the sentence φ is deontically inconsistent. This avoids the logic collapse, and, on the other hand, this allows to “repair” or to refine the given information set. This approach can be used, for instance, for analyzing paradoxes based on contrary-toduty obligations.

Automated Deduction for Deontic Logics: Laying the Foundations of Legal Expert Systems
ABSTRACT: Deontic logic can be used to formalise legal rules. The automation of reasoning in deontic logic can therefore be used as the basis of a legal expert system. In this paper we investigate the automation of deontic logic using tableau calculi for modal logics. The correspondance between the deontic and modal logics is outlined and the tableau for the modal logics used in the prover are ...
متن کاملDeontic Logics for Modeling Behavioural Variability
We discuss the application of deontic logics to the modeling of variabilities in product family descriptions. Deontic logics make it possible to express concepts like permission and obligation. As a first result of this line of research, we show how a Modal Transition System, a model that has recently been proposed as an expressive way to deal with behavioural variability in product families, c...
متن کاملIntroducing Grades in Deontic Logics
In this paper we define a framework to introduce gradedness in Deontic logics through the use of fuzzy modalities. By way of example, we instantiate the framework to Standard Deontic logic (SDL) formulas. Given a deontic formula Φ ∈ SDL, our language contains formulas of the form r → NΦ or r → PΦ, where r ∈ [0, 1], expressing that the preference or probability degree respectively of a norm Φ is...
متن کاملAction negation and alternative reductions for dynamic deontic logics
Dynamic deontic logics reduce normative assertions about explicit complex actions to standard dynamic logic assertions about the relation between complex actions and violation conditions. We address two general, but related problems in this field. The first is to find a formalization of the notion of ‘action negation’ that (1) has an intuitive interpretation as an action forming combinator and ...
متن کاملA Note for Discussion: Treating Disjunctive Obligation and Conjunctive Action in Event Semantics with Disquotation
Standard deontic logics are about what obtains in deontically ideal worlds. Deontic reasoning from the perspective of event semantics and the disquotation (ESD) theory, which we describe briefly, is about individual obligations, permissions, etc. in this, admittedly non-ideal world. Standard deontic logics are beset with a number of puzzling paradoxes and anomalies. Our suggestion here is that ...
